The Importance of Exfoliation

I ask this question many times and, more often than not, I get a deer-in-the-headlights look. “Exfoliation? No? What’s that?” or “I know I should be doing it, but I don’t.”

Here is Exfoliation 101.

The beautiful thing about our bodies is we regenerate. Our body is a smart complex of neurons and electrons that are constantly moving and circulating. We have skin cells that are being born in the deep layer of our skin called the dermis:

These little cuties will eventually move to the top of our skin called the epidermis. When these little guys are born, they are fat and plump. The closer they move to the top of the skin’s surface, they flatten out and eventually die. (Am I the only one that sees this irony?)

These flat cells build up over time and create dull, dry and sometimes fine lines to our skin. This is where exfoliation is key to your weekly skincare routine. There are two types of exfoliation:

Manual: Manual uses a physical process like a scrub or micro-dermabrasion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microdermabrasion to physically remove the dead skin cells.

Chemical: Chemical can be a liquid or gel substance that lowers the PH of the skin to loosen or digest the dead cells on your skin. (http://hollywoodbeautiful.com/beautasia/ahasbhas-whats-the-dif/)

Beautasia note: It’s not good to over-exfoliate the skin. It can lead to irritation and removal of good bacterias that protect our skin’s surface.

Today, we have a special treat and special recipe you can make in your very own kitchen brought to you by Simple Elegance by SJ.

Green Goddess Mask

With the change in seasons, we all really need to focus on sloughing off that dead, dulling, winter skin.  We also need to rehydrate and balance our skin to get it ready for the warmer, sunny months to come.

This mask doubles as both a scrub and mask with Poppy seeds to exfoliate and reveal your glowing skin within, Cucumber to hydrate and balance, Yogurt to improve texture and reduce pore size, Fresh mint and peppermint oil to invigorate and rejuvenate, and Avocado to moisturize and improve collagen production!!!

Mix the following ingredients:

  • 1 TBS Poppy seeds,
  • 1/4 Cucumber (crushed),
  • 1 TBS Plain yogurt,
  • 1/4 Avocado (mashed),
  • 1 Tsp of Fresh chopped mint and,
  • 1 drop of Peppermint essential oil.
Apply to a clean face. Scrub in circular motions for 1 min, then leave on for 10 mins.  Rinse and pat dry.  REVEAL THE GODDESS WITHIN!!!

Awesome! I use to exfoliate with honey and brown sugar, because the brown sugar breaks down…the honey is great at creating moisture and has anti-bacteria properties. And then cleanse with plain yogurt…
