Celebs Give Thanks and Give Back

With the advent of Thanksgiving around the corner, we are all busily planning for the big day of friends, family, food, and Black Friday sales! Do you ever wonder how the celebs get down for Thanksgiving? Do they eat turkeys with gold flakes or use all Tiffany & Co. china? Although it might appear that celebrities live completely opposite lives than us regular folk; when it comes to celebrating the holidays, we aren’t all that different. Many celebrities, like us, are rolling up the sleeves of their James Perse shirts and helping those who are less fortunate.

The hilarious Ellen Degeneres is urging turkey lovers to forego eating turkey this year and adopting one instead! Ellen is involved in Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt-a-Turkey program. “Did you know that every year between 250 and 300 million turkeys are bred for slaughter in the United States?” Degeneres asks. “More than 46 million for Thanksgiving alone. So, this Thanksgiving instead of eating a turkey, please join me in adopting one from Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt-A-Turkey Project and you can give a turkey something to be thankful for. You and Ellen can go on turkey play dates together! Imagine the fun!

The LA Mission was like a Hollywood hot spot this year as Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Zoe Saldana, and Blair Underwood all volunteered their time to help feed some of LA’s less fortunate residents. The volunteers must have been super busy as 3,000 pounds of turkey, 700 pounds of mashed potatoes, 600 pies and other Thanksgiving goodies were served on Thanksgiving Eve 2011.

Rapper Lil’Wayne and members of his record label Cash Money went back to their old neighborhood in New Orleans and gave out turkeys to local residents last week. I might not like his skinnies, but humanitarianism suits him well!

Kudos to celebrities who take time out of their busy schedule to give back to the less fortunate! It is a beautiful thing to see celebs, who have very little free time to begin, with spending a holiday with the disadvantaged.

However you chose to celebrate your Thanksgiving this year, I hope you take time to appreciate all that you have and celebrate with loved ones, good food, and even better shopping! Happy Thanksgiving, Beauties!

Top 5 Hollywood Beauties That Give Back

1) James Franco – I love this guy! He’s highly intelligent, cute as hell, and a great actor. Did you see him on The Colbert Report? He’s adorable and a total Renaissance man! He attended UCLA and took over 62 units per quarter. He also attended Columbia and is getting a PhD in English at Yale.

James Franco was introduced to Art of Elysium by Kirsten Dunst, which encourages actors, musicians, artists, to volunteer their time and visit sick children in the hospital. “Art of Elysium really saved my life. There’s nothing better than giving back,” says James. Check out: http://www.theartofelysium.org/

4) Lady Gaga - I love Mother Monster’s daring makeup and outfits, music, political views, and her sick abs! I truly admire her for being an advocate for Gay Rights and Anti-Bullying and seems to be a genuinely good person who appreciates her fans. She also helped support victims of the tsunami/earthquake in Japan by donating proceeds from concerts and merch and for the earthquake in Haiti. She spoke out against Arizona’s SB 1070, and joined Cyndi Lauper for the Viva Glam MAC campaign to help fund AIDS research.

Gaga is also launching her very own Anti-Bullying organization aptly titled The Born This Way Foundation .  The BTW Foundation will be led by Gaga and her mother. “Together we hope to establish a standard of Bravery and Kindness, as well as a community worldwide that protects and nurtures others in the face of bullying and abandonment,”says Gaga. B-Aware and “Think Pink”

Happy October, ladies! I know most of us think of Halloween and costume parties this month, but let’s not forget something even more important… Drawing a blank? October is Breast Cancer Awareness month! That’s why you see a plethora of cute, pink limited-edition items. Even rough n’ tough NFL players are sporting pink shoes!

But seriously, this is a very sobering and important issue, and celebs are doing their part to help the cause.

Giuliana Rancic recently announced during her interview on the Today show that she was diagnosed with the early stages of breast cancer and will undergo surgery and radiation. The news was a total shock to me, but I was astounded by Giuliana’s bravery and willingness to share her story to help spread awareness.

There are many other starlets who help the cause and/or are survivors themselves and devoting their time to the cause.

  • Reese Witherspoon is the Honorary Chairperson for Avon’s Foundation for Women since 2007 and walked alongside other supporters and survivors at the Avon Breast Cancer Awareness Walk this year. She presented a $9.1 million check in grants on behalf of the foundation. Go, Elle Woods!

  • Christina Applegate is another survivor and supporter. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and subsequently underwent a double mastectomy. Ms. Applegate is the ambassador for Lee National Denim Day, which encourages women to wear jeans to work on October 7th as a sign of solidarity. Another great reason to go casual during the week! Jeans for everyone!

  • Taylor Swift is yet another supporter who not only performs to benefit the cause, but also rocks Loft’s breast cancer awareness bracelet on an interview on The View.

  • Last, but not least, on this list of starlets who are fighting for a cure is one of my fave models – Kate Moss. The newly-wedded supermodel posed in a campaign on behalf of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer and donated some of her own items to an auction benefiting Breast Cancer Care organized by Sadie Frost.

I bet you’re ready to do some shopping and help support this worthy cause! The LOFT has some cute tees and super glam bracelets.

Ulta houses some very cute and chic beauty products that you must check out! Essie nail polish has a limited edition breast cancer awareness pale pink polish. Such a delicate color with a powerful purpose!

Next up, Philosophy has Hope in a Jar which is a moisturizer suitable for all skin types in sparkling pink.

Eek, I die! Conair has a Power of Pink curling iron and blow dryer in hot pink. All of the items at Ulta are under $40!

This is just a sampling of all that is being offered in the name of breast cancer research. There are many more wonderful companies supporting this important cause. So ladies, before I leave you to your shopping, I MUST urge you to do your monthly breast self-exam. Remind yourself, your friends, and family…and live beautiful and healthy lives. Not sure how to do a self exam? Not to worry, this link will show you how!
